HEALTHIERUS SCHOOL CHALLENGE
Ten schools, A.W. Jones Elementary, Bussey Elementary, Dunn Elementary, Gray Elementary, Johnson Elementary, Kujawa Elementary, Marcella Intermediate, Oleson Elementary, Parker Intermediate and Wilson Intermediate, have been selected to participate in the HealthierUS School Challenge. Childhood overweight and obesity are major concerns in the United States. Evidence indicates that poor nutrition, physical inactivity and obesity are associated with lower student achievement. Recognizing that schools have more influence on the lives of young people than any other institution, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) encourages all schools to take a leadership role in helping students learn to make healthier eating and physical activity choices that will last a lifetime.

USDA has established the HealthierUS School Challenge (HUSSC) to recognize schools that create healthier school environments by providing nutrition education, nutritious food and beverage choices, physical education and opportunities for physical activity.

The Challenge is a voluntary national certification initiative for schools participating in the National School Lunch Program. Each school along with Child Nutrition Services strives to meet or exceed established criteria in nutrition standards for meals, nutrition education and physical education and activity.

Recognition of the winning schools includes an award plaque and banner from USDA and a monetary award
